Key fob stopped working

A weak battery is the most common cause.

• Open the fob (most have a small slot for a coin or flat screwdriver).
• Check the number printed on the old battery and buy the same type.
• Swap it, making sure the + side faces the same way.
• Test the buttons near the car.

Push-start car won’t detect your key

Many push-button cars have a backup spot that reads a weak fob.

• Hold the fob right against the start button, then press the button with the fob.
• If that fails, check your owner’s manual for the backup spot on your model.
• Most smart fobs also hide a metal emergency key inside for the door.

If none of that works, the fob or its programming may be the problem.

Key won’t turn in the ignition

Usually the steering wheel lock is engaged.

• Make sure the car is in Park (or Neutral for manuals).
• Gently turn the steering wheel side to side while turning the key.
• Don’t force it. A key that bends or cracks can break off in the ignition.

Key worn smooth or bent? A new key usually fixes it.

Locked out of your car

Before you call:

• Check every door and the trunk release.
• See if someone can bring a spare.
• Avoid coat hangers and slim jims. They can damage door wiring, seals, and locks.

Key sticks or is hard to turn

Locks collect dust and grime over time.

• Use a dry graphite or lubricant made for locks.
• Insert and remove the key a few times to spread it.
• Avoid heavy oil sprays, which can attract dirt.

If it’s still stiff, the key may be worn or the lock may need service.

Key broke off in the lock

Don’t make it worse.

• Don’t push the broken piece further in.
• Keep both pieces. We can often cut a new key from them.
• Call us to extract the piece and get you a working key.

Lost your house keys

Think about who might find them.

• If your keys had your address or ID with them, rekey your locks soon.
• Rekeying makes old keys useless and costs less than new locks.
